Castles
Super historic castle and castle ruins abound in Loch Lomond , The Trossachs and Braveheart Country. Our highlights and favourites include:
Stirling Castle
Stirling is the most strategically important of all the castles in Scotland . Hence it has been fought over and changed hands more than any other Scottish castle. It is at the landward end of the Firth of Forth, and controls movement across the Lowlands and into the Highlands . He who controlled Stirling , effectively controlled Scotland . Many rate this scotland 's finest castle visitor experience and it is a 'must visit'.
Doune Castle
Doune Castle is an impressive late 14th century stone enclosure fortress. Built of an unusual design with two substantial towers and a 40ft high curtain wall. Doune Castle is located east of the village centre, at Castle Hill. 8 miles north-west of Stirling on the A84-A820. Open all year round.
Drummond Castle
Drummond Castle , south of Crieff, has a keep built in the 15th century. The visitor, who can only enter the extraordinary garden, approaches the castle via a very long and beautiful dark avenue of trees. The symmetrical garden was laid out by John Drummond, second earl of Perth , in 1630. The central feature of the garden is St. Andrews cross, enriched by Italian marble statues.
Inveraray Castle
This magnificent and historic Scottish castle is home to the Clan Campbell. Open from 3 April until 31 October, it is a wonderful visitor experience.
Kilchurn Castle
A little further afield, Kilchurn, a spectacular ruin, is the original castle of the Glenurchy and Breadalbane Campbells. The castle stands upon a low plateau of rock at the end of a level spit of marshy land which intrudes into the northeastern end of Loch Awe. In recent years teak stairs have been installed to allow access to the upper levels of the tower, greatly increasing the interest of a visit and the range of views up Glenstrae and Glenorchy and across the loch to Cruachan.
